Hamburger pie is a recipe that I grew up eating! My grandma used to make it and after she passed away, my dad continued to make it. We have done it with just beef or just sausage but I personally like the combo with both. Traditionally, we made this with Velveta and didn’t use the fresh herbs. As good as Velveta tastes, it can’t be good for you at all, so I avoid using it when possible. (I use cheddar cheese and Gouda in this recipe but if you feel like splurging, replace both of those with a half block of diced Velveta, I won’t tell!)
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb lean beef
- 1/2 lb hot sausage or chorizo
- 1/4 red onion, diced
- 1 handful of chopped green onion
- 1 can mixed veggies
- 1 block of cheddar cheese, cubed
- Gouda cheese
- 5 leaves of fresh sage, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- Pie crust
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Remove the pie crust from the fridge and leave it out while you cook so that it can get to room temp. Preheat oven according to pie crust suggested temperature.
Place ground beef, sausage/chorizo and red onion in a large skillet on medium to medium-high heat until brown. Make sure to break the ground meat up with a wooden spoon while it is cooking. (The smaller the pieces, the faster it will cook.)
Once the meat is browned turn the heat down to medium-low and add in the green onion, the can of mixed veggies, cheddar cheese, gouda, sage, and garlic. Stir frequently so that the cheese does not burn and to accelerate the melting process.
While the cheese is melting you can unroll the pie crust and lay the bottom half into a pie pan, pressing it into the bottom of the pan. Once all of the cheese has melted, pour the skillet ingredients into the pie pan. Lay the second pie crust flat on top of the pie pan and trim the edges to fit around the pie pan. You will want to leave a little extra around the edge so you are able to pinch the bottom crust and the top together (You can always remove more but cannot add back). Once you are done pinching the crust you can add a few slits to the top of the pie crust. You can do these randomly or make a fun design with this.
Place your pie in the oven and cook according to package instructions. Remember, everything is already cooked inside so you are just cooking the pie crust.
Once the crust is cooked to your liking, remove from oven and let cool at least for five minutes. I know how hard the wait is at this point but I know you can do it! Slice your hamburger pie and enjoy!
